Tentato Suicido (Suicide Attempt)
Neorealist filmmaker Cesare Zavattini set the formula for the "inquest" film Love in the City: six true stories taken from the news papers, filmed in the actual locations and "starring" the people who were involved. In his segement, Antonioni interviews three young women who tried to kill themselves for love. Describing and re-enacting their suicide attempts, the survivors give a testimony that is riddled with emotional omissions, as if their own feelings and lives are many miles distant. Antonioni wanted more than plain reportage: "I sought to arouse the public's revulsion against suicide by showing the spiritual desolation of the characters."
